Bringing in Some Interest into a Forgotten Room…
I always find that bathrooms somewhat get forgotten about, even though they are one of the most used rooms in our homes. We visit this room daily. And yet, it can become a very utilitarian room. All function and no design. No one really thinks about how to elevate a bathroom, and yet taking a few simple steps can make such a difference.
When it came to our bathroom makeover in our rental reno series on my YouTube Channel, I really concentrated on design. I couldn’t change the layout of the bathroom pieces (though if I had control of redesigning this bathroom, boy would I go for it). So really, I could only make it look gorgeous.
These things don’t have to be too complicated. In fact, most of these are so simple and will have a huge impact on your bathroom. Here are some simple ways to elevate your bathroom.
Bring the Outside In.
What a difference a plant can make to a space. I love adding greenery to all rooms. Plus, they are so good for both mental and physical health, as plant help to keep the air fresh. When you are wanting to elevate your bathroom, you need a plant that is low maintenance, that thrives in a moist room and doesn’t get a lot of sunlight (most bathrooms have frosting on windows). In this case, a fern is ideal for the bathroom. How do I keep it alive? Once a week, I give it a drink in the morning and leave it in the sink for the day.

Bring in Textures.
Bathrooms are always very shiny. When you think about the bath, shower, sink and toilet they are very glossy. To counter this, you need to bring in texture. This can be simple as bringing in a wooden toilet seat. It’s such a simple switchover but makes a huge difference to your space.
Other ways to do this can be as simple as a small piece of wooden furniture. Functional, practical and chic. For us, we have three. Our bathroom cabinet was one of my best Facebook Marketplace finds, it brings in so much warmth to the room. The others are our towel rack and the vintage wooden stool that I DIY myself.
Create an Element of Surprise.
Something that is simple that can create interest and elevate your bathroom is creating a moment of surprise. For me, this comes in two forms in our bathroom. The first is the wallpaper, I love that we went for such a bold choice on our walls. The second is the corner over our toilet. It’s not something you see straightaway when you come through the door, but it’s a fun element with prints.
It could be a small decor item, a gorgeous wall colour or a fun print. Just something unexpected that will delight people when they come into the space.

Mix Your Metals.
Mixing metals is a great way to elevate your bathroom. It’s such a lux way to style your home that not many people do. The trick is to make sure you balance the number of things so it doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb.
Most fixtures are chrome or silver, so to combat that, look at adding elements of warm gold. This can be in the lights, frames, knobs, etc. Small little hints are a great way of taking your bathroom to the next level.
Create a Signature Scent.
The scent is a forgotten element of design. It can complete a room, it’s great as the finishing note to a place. When it comes to the bathroom, candles are great but you don’t want to light them and leave them alone. So for me, I’m obsessed with diffusers, particularly in spaces we don’t spend a lot of time in. I love to go with a light, fresh scent. In our bathroom we went with an olive scent, it’s perfect for the home.
