Small Bedroom Design Tips
Making the Most of the Space You’ve Got…
When it comes to a small bedroom, it can be hard to know what to prioritise when decorating it. Whether you’re designing a guest bedroom, master bedroom or a kid’s bedroom, creating a sanctuary is possible with the right tools.
Having lived in a small primary bedroom for a couple of years, I’ve become a bit of an expert when it comes to decorating a space that is both visually pleasing and functional. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution, but there are a few tricks that I’ve learnt that will work on whatever bedroom you’re decorating.
So if you’re wanting to give your room a changeup, here are my small bedroom design tips…

Prioritise the Essentials.
When it comes to small bedroom design tips, the first is to recognise the essentials. Truthfully, you don’t need that much in your primary bedroom. Personally, you only really need a bed, dresser and wardrobe. Both can bring styling opportunities as well as dual functionality.
In my primary bedroom, I can fit in an additional table to get ready in. However, if I couldn’t, the top of the dress can become an area to get ready in. The space under your bed is ideal for additional storage. Finally, your wardrobe can have a dresser within there if you had to.
You’ve got to get creative. And as I’ve spoken about before with small spaces, I don’t see them as a problem, but a design challenge that I love to tackle.
Rethink the Nightstand.
I love a nightstand styling moment, but when you’ve got to think about square footage, you need to change it up and go against the norm. Choosing a smaller, leggy piece rather than the traditional blocky nightstand will bring a more opening feeling to the bedroom. Personally, I’d go for a more decorative side table or stool to bring that contrast and interest.
When we lived in our previous rental apartment, I actually used the dresser as a nightstand, doubling up on space. If you need to, break with tradition and completely forgo the nightstand. Be that rebel.
Take Advantage of Your Walls.
One of the most important small bedroom design tips is to take advantage of your walls. You want to take as much as you can off the floor and take the eyes upwards. Creating a focal point will give the eyes a place to rest and the illusion of more space.
Something I always get comments on within my Instagram feeds is my decorative mirror. I love placing something above the bed or to the side, or both! Use mirrors, prints or wall art, anything goes.
Get Creative with Lighting.
Mood lighting is very important in a bedroom. Layering different types of light can help illuminate each vignette, making a small room feel more interesting. Whilst I’d love to fill my room with as many table and floor lamps as I can, sometimes this is not possible.
If you don’t have room for either of these lights, try incorporating scones above your nightstands or to the side of your bed will help create that atmospheric lighting.

Mix Up Your Textures.
When it comes to styling your small bedroom, it’s time to start thinking about the textures. Furniture wise, going for lighter, tonal furniture will help with that light and airy feel. Now, when it comes to making your bed, incorporating minimal and lighter-weight materials in a small bedroom through bedding and textiles will give the room a more relaxed, open feeling.
So when you start to style your bedroom, think linens, light-coloured rugs and pared-down throw pillows.
