How to Organise a Small Kitchen
Making the Most of the Space You’ve Got.
When it comes to how to organise a small kitchen, there’s a couple of things to consider. With such little space, to begin with, you have to really consider what you’re investing in. For me, when it comes to any type of organisation, it’s all about combining the stylish with the practical. If I’m going to use it every day, I want it to look gorgeous. Something that suits the style of my home, whilst also performing the activity that I need it to do.
When it came to our kitchen makeover and the renovations were completed, it was time to work on organising it. It was a mission that needed to happen. And I’m happy to say that I completed it. So now, our kitchen is a heaven of organisational success. I know where everything is and being in the room is a dream.
The one thing about our kitchen is that it’s small, so when it came to organising it, there were a few hints and tips that I picked up along the way. How-tos that I cannot wait to share with you. Here are my tip tips for how to organise a small kitchen and make the most out of your space.
Utilise Storage Containers.
As I mentioned, the key to having a stylish, well-organised kitchen is all to do with the mesh of practical and stylish. This is why I like to utilise storage containers where I can. Personally, I like to favour clear glass jars. This allows me to get rid of any packaging that doesn’t fit in with my aesthetic, but I’m also able to monitor how much of a product we have at quick glance.
I mainly utilise these in our kitchen pantry, storing our baking ingredients. They blend in nicely with the rest of our kitchen, as well as allowing me to stock up what I need as and when.
Think Vertically.
What you lack in square footage, most kitchens make up with the square footage of walls. Luckily for us, our Victorian terrace, we have almost two and a half metres of ceiling height, much more than the average home. With this and when it came to making over our rental kitchen, I built this storage unit next and surrounding our refrigerator. Not only did this allow me to take advantage of as much space around the wall vertically, but it enclosed this alcove nicely.
Another way to take advantage of vertical storage is additional cabinets, going as high as you can. Take your kitchen from standard to custom by taking your cabinets to the ceiling. This looks more premium and allows you to take advantage of all that unused space. If I owned this home, I would have cabinets all the way to the ceiling and use the top ones to store plates and bowls that only come out for special occasions. Other ways to take advantage of vertical storage is floating shelves and free-standing cabinets.
Invest in Clear Storage for the Fridge.
One of my favourite things that I’ve invested in is clear storage for your fridge. Plastic boxes that allow you to organise and sort similar products together. This idea was totally inspired by The Home Edit and I’ve never looked back. Everything is put together, I know where everything is and food is never wasted cause I know what is what.
When you have a small kitchen, it’s important to ensure nothing gets lost or unused, and this applies to your fridge. So give it a go, organise by food type and see how easy it is to manover around your kitchen once you do.

Be Smart About Drawer Space.
Drawers are few and far in a small kitchen and it’s vital to be smart with their usage. It’s a hard habit to get out of, but it’s time to stop tossing Tupperware into them. Invest in fancy drawer-organisation, especially in your cutlery drawer. Keep them clear and clean and your space will be working so much smarter for you.
In terms of organisation, I would go for boxes or actual drawer dividers if you need more custom organisation for your kitchen gadgets.
Hide Your Trash Bins.
There’s nothing I hate more than a gorgeous kitchen and then the trash bins just being there. Plus, they take up valuable floor space, so get hiding them. When we did our kitchen makeover, I ended up building a cupboard that would store both our trash and recycling bins. Out of sight, out of mind, less taking over the valuable space on your floor.
