How to Make Your Home Feel Brighter
That Calm But Bright Feeling…
I’m all about a home that is light, bright and airy. Making a home feel brighter is probably the one thing that my friends ask me to help them with (that and how to style shelves). I’ve described my home in many ways, California modern, vintage modern. But every style has one thing in common. That bright, calming feel.
Making a home feel brighter is actually surprisingly easy to do so. And, it’s not boring. I feel many people confuse brightness with no depth or even colour. I use to be that way, however over time, I’ve found my grove and have come back to embracing those tones and patterns.
Making your home feeling can be done within a couple of days. So if you’ve got some time this weekend and want to mix your interior style, here are my top tips for letting in the light…
EMBRACE THE WHITE WALLS.
If there’s one thing you’ll pick up from my Instagram feed, is that I love a white wall. The generic white wall can seem boring, but trust me. Embracing that white wall will maximise the brightness and space in your home. If your home is short of natural light, make the most of it and grab a tin of paint.
No two whites are the same and the same white doesn’t always work for every room of your home. A south-facing home will work pretty much with more pure white, as anything with a yellow undertone will come off creamy. It’s the opposite of a north-facing home. You’ll actually want to go for a more creamy colour, as the blue undertones will be picked up and come off more cold and dark.
MIRRORS ARE GOING TO BE YOUR BEST FRIENDS.
When it comes to bouncing light around your home, mirrors are going to be your go-to. When placed strategically, they can help you maximise any natural light the room already receives. Placing a mirror opposite or within the eyesight of a window will bounce it back and give you that spread of light around the space. For my home, I have a large mirror above our fireplace and within the entryway space.
The bonus that comes with mirrors is playing with space. As they do mirror their image, it tricks your eye into making the room look and feels bigger than it seems. Another great tip when it comes to making your home feel brighter.
GIVE YOUR WINDOWS A CLEAN.
I hate to ask, but when was the last time you cleaned your windows? Anytime I feel the living room is feeling a little dark and small, I know it’s time to send my husband to go and clean the windows. By giving them some TLC and a bit of elbow grease, you’ll notice the difference in the light that comes pouring into your home.
Ideally, you should be cleaning your window’s once a month, but even if you make a note to do a deep clean every season, it will make a difference to your home and how you feel in the space.
