How to Style a Small Space
Because how to style a small space shouldn’t be difficult…
It’s fair to say that I’ve lived in my fair share of small spaces. Renting a place garuntees three things; those ugly wall mirrors (if you rent you know what I’m talking about), a lack of storage and small rooms. Whilst our current home is a lot bigger than the apartments we’ve previously lived in, it’s by no means a large home. Our house is a traditional two up, two down terrace and each room are quaint. Which is a nice way of saying it’s tiny. It works for us now and allows me to dream of more space when we eventually buy. It’s fair to say, I know a thing or two on how to style a small space.
When you’ve not got much room to work with, it can seem quite daunting on how furniture can work in a space and how you can create a feeling of roominess. But here are a few tricks that you can put up your sleeve and apply to your current situation…
KEEP YOUR INTERIOR STYLE COHESIVE THROUGHOUT YOUR HOME.
This is my number one tip on how to style a small space. You’ll notice from our recent room makeovers that we stick to the same uniform of light walls and neutral tones. Whilst these are very much in keeping with our interior style it is also to maximise the size of each room. Because each room flows into each other, it’s almost an extension so there’s an illusion of the room being much bigger than it is.
Whether it’s a colour or a texture, ensure there’s a little bit of that in each room so there’s a flow, allowing you to maximise the space in your home as much as possible.
ADD A MIRROR WHERE YOU CAN.
Mirrors create so much light in a small space, making it seems much bigger than it is. I recently put up this gorgeous mirror (matching floor mirror here) in the living room and it’s done so much to it! I feel like the room has really open up and feels ten times larger, as it’s bouncing so much light around the room.
Mirrors are perfect, large or small, they will instantly make the room feel so much larger. For rentals, if you are scared of making holes in the wall, a large floor mirror that leans against the wall would look gorgeous.
BASKETS ARE KEY FOR STORAGE.
Boy, do I love a basket. baskets are ideal for storing the odd bits and bobs, but also for hiding clutter. That basket next to my tv with the pillows and throws? There’s a couple of pairs of Lee’s shoes in there also that he’s lefted in the living room. Homesense is my go-to for woven baskets. They look fabulous and they are so affordable. Clear that clutter and your room will look instantly bigger.
TRAYS PLACED WHEREEVER YOU CAN.
I love a good tray, especially on a coffee table. Firstly, the help collect and hide clutter from being spread out throughout your entire home. But they are also great for allowing you to move items from room to room, should you want to do a restyle. I find with items group together in one place allow your eye to see the rest of the room and give you the illusion of a larger space. Trays can be really inexspensive and most of mine were absolute bargains.
CABINETS TO HIDE THE STORAGE.
When I first purchased our kitchen cabinet, I was disapointed when I realised I picked up the wrong doors for it. Thank goodness I did because I am so happy I’ve got the half-glass, half-wooden ones. The top allows me to create a style moment. The bottom half is perfect for hiding all the clutter. Where you can, get yourself storage where you can shove things in and never look back. A cabinet, a sideboard or even bedside table. Ensure you small space has some furniture that allows you to create a style moment but also can hide your clutter.
