Creating the Perfect Reading Nook

I love a bit of me-time. I love just curling up in a space and just being by myself. And now that the living room makeover has now been completed, I’m so happy to have my little reading nook back in my home. Of course, this is not just a reading nook. It’s a laptop club space, coffee-time spot and also, hold my handbag when I first come through the door space. This chair was originally purchased for Lee, but I think it’s safe to say, I’ve claimed it for myself.

No matter how big or small your space is, you need a space that is just yours to unwind and relax in. So here are my hints and tips for creating your perfect reading nook…

Creating the perfect reading nook…

The perfect seat. Having the perfect seat is one of the keys to creating the perfect reading nook. This can be a gorgeous chair or a corner of your sofa. Wherever you want to escape to, it’s got to be comfy. So invest in the perfect seat for you to sit back and unwind. Cover it in loads of cushions and style with a gorgeous throw. However you have it, it needs to be perfect for you. Once you hit that sweet spot of comfort, you’ll appreciate your reading nook so much more.

The perfect lighting. Much like the perfect seat, the perfect lighting is vital for creating your reading nook. Too dark and you’re going to be squinting. Too bright and you’re going to hurt your eyes also. I’m obsessed with this new light from Barker & Stonehouse. Its the perfect size light for the space and looks great in the living room. Who knew Barker & Stonehouse did home accessories. The lighting needs to be at the perfect height for you, so this lamp sitting on my side tables works perfectly in this space. Once you get the lighting in harmony with your seating area- you’re onto a winner.

SIT BACK AND RELAX.

A fabulous side table. The perfect reading nook needs a side table for you to rest your book on (or your coffee). These marble side tables have served me well. There are multi-layers to them, which means I can house my gorgeous new lamp on one level and my coffee on the other; without it feeling cluttered. You want to find the perfect side table that is either the same height or slightly below the armrest.

Some beautiful accessories. Once you’ve got your reading nook basics, it’s time for accessories. As mentioned, you’re of course going to need some cushions- not only for decorations but to also lean against so your back is nice and comfy. I would also recommend a candle to sit on your side table. Not only are they pretty, but a lovely smelling one will fill the nook with a lovely scent. I also like to add some personal objects, just to make the space feel homely. By putting Lee’s vintage camera on show, it’s a side of him that not many people know about, and it adds a little extra to the reading nook. I also have my collection of Vogues/ fashion magazines- these are issues I’ve picked up from the countries I’ve visited or ones that are special editions. Adding these extra details makes it more than just a space in your room. It gives it character and space.
